The Crew Of Planet Express Is Coming Back!

Futurama was one of the most successful science fiction animated series to ever be canceled by Fox back in the early 2000s. The show was incredibly popular and was brought back by popular-fan-demand after some successful DVD sales proved to Fox Executives that they were being silly with an amazing property. The show was again revived on Comedy Central and came to a natural conclusion in 2013 with a very satisfying final adventure through time and space. Now, it looks like Fry, Leela, Bender, and the rest of the Planet Express crew are coming back thanks to a new video game that has just gone into development.

Futurama Worlds of Tomorrow is not the first venture into mobile gaming for Futurama since the show went off the air, but it is a special addition to the property since it appears that the storyline for the game will begin where the show last ended.

The company responsible for developing the game, TinyCo, has gotten the crew back together to develop this new venture. Matt Groening and David X. Cohen have been working closely with their team to work daily on the game. According to Andrew Green, head of business operations, the talent behind the production is something fans can definitely look forward to:

“We’re also working with Rough Draft Studios, Peter Avanzino and Claudia Katz, who are the original producers and animation supervisors of the show for the look and feel of the game as well as some original animation that we’re creating, like full-length original animation as well.”

Not only are we going to get some new content for the Futurama universe, but it sounds like we will see some full animation sequences. Fans of the show and the original XBox game may recall that game’s storyline was, in itself, a fully animated adventure so the prospect of getting something akin to that is something to be excited about. Green didn’t release many details about the game, but did comment on the nature of how it fits into the Futurama universe:

It feels like an ongoing kind of infinite series. We’ve taken where the canon is, where it’s left off on its last run with Comedy Central, and we are creating a new story that is more akin to one of the movies that they did between the Fox run and the Comedy Central run. There’s a big thing that happens in the universe, but it’s the universe as people know it and it exists after the Comedy Central run. There’s a big thing that happens, and then slowly but surely you’re fixing that and then getting into all-new stories with all the characters that you love. The thing that the guys — Matt and David — were exceptionally excited about is creating new stories, getting deeper into the backgrounds of some characters that we don’t know and maybe even creating new characters eventually and definitely new planets and places of exploration.

The current release date for Futurama Worlds of Tomorrow is not yet known as the game is still in the early stages of development so keep an eye on NerdBastards.com for all your Futurama-related news and everything else nerdy!
